TORONTO, Sept. 30 /CNW/ - Despite saying three days ago "I will not be
backing off" (St. Catharines Standard, September 27, 2007), CFTO News reported
tonight that John Tory is preparing to back away from sending tax dollars for
private religious schools.
"Despite Tory's defense of the policy CTV News has learned that he may be
prepared to temporarily back away from the controversial funding issue.
Sources tell CTV News that Tory is talking to his caucus about a plan to
restart his campaign, the idea is to soften the bitter taste of the faith
based school funding issue, options include deferring the plan for a year
or sending it to a commission or even public hearings. An official in the
John Tory camp denied any knowledge of our information but sources tell
us the back away strategy may be the only option if Tory has any hope at
defeating the McGuinty Liberals."
