John Tory decoder - Family Health Teams

TORONTO, Oct. 4 /CNW/ - Today we used our John Tory decoder ring to
translate his answer on how to improve the way doctors work.
Here's John Tory's answer from his press conference in Peterborough:

"Well, when I've sat down with the doctors, what they've told me, and I
don't claim to be an expert on this as yet, but I have sat with some of
the older doctors who are in a position to look at retirement in the
next few years, and they say things like this:

There are very few opportunities for us to rent an office say three
days a week, so we have to end up renting an office and paying rent for
7 days a week, but we only want to practice 3 days a week, so it
becomes economically not viable for us. They talk about their insurance
arrangements. When they buy their malpractice insurance arrangements,
there is really no such thing at the moment as being able to buy
insurance that is at some kind of a lesser premium on the condition
that you are practicing on a part time basis. And the thing they talk
the most about is what they call "support." What they mean by that is,
if you're on your own, if you're used to practicing on your own, there
comes a time in your practice perhaps where you would like to have
somebody that could help you, or extra help, like a nurse and/or a
receptionist, and you might have been doing without either or both of
those, and if you want to slow down a bit, then the more help you have
doing some of these kinds of things the easier it will be for you to
slow down a little bit but keep practicing.

And so, the support thing is the thing mentioned the most. And I think
there it consists of paraprofessionals, nurses, and then nurses who are
professionals, nurse practitioners, but other than even
paraprofessionals, like assistant people, and office staff to help
people with some of the administrative aspects even of practicing
      medicine.

So basically, just saying I don't want to carry on with the same
lifestyle and the same burdens that I have been carrying, but I do want
to practice medicine to some extent, I understand that and I think this
is a way we can help facilitate.

Even if you had doctors sharing with each other, you know you could
find an arrangement perhaps where they could share an office and share
      professional help."

We put that answer through the John Tory decoder. It comes out: Family
Health Teams.
Doctors work in a team with nurses, nurse practitioners and other health
professionals. Ontario Liberals created 150 of them, including 5 in
Peterborough where John Tory gave this answer. Thanks in part to these Family
Health Teams, 500,000 more Ontarians have access to family health care. Now we
plan to create another 50 to help more Ontario families.
Even John Tory understands Ontario Liberals are getting results. It just
takes him 390 more words to say so.
