TORONTO, Sept. 27 /CNW/ - The excessively negative campaign of John Tory
continued today with his lunch bag letdown speech to the Canadian Club and
Empire Club where he continued to run the province down and refused to stand
up for fairness, says Deputy Premier George Smitherman.
"This is more John NegaTory. Everywhere he goes he runs this province
down. He presents himself as the negative option in this election," said
Smitherman noted that despite Tory's attempt to run the province down,
our economy continues to perform well with new jobs being created.
"There are more than 350,000 additional jobs today than in 2003," said
Smitherman. "For the first time ever we are the number one auto producer in
North America, and that's three years running."
Ontario has 58% of its workforce equipped with a post secondary
education. That's the highest rate of any G8 country.
Smitherman said that Ontario is pushing ahead on all cylinders but that
when even one family is affected by job loss, it's one too many.
"We saw today a massive federal surplus, but still Ontario workers have
to put in more time for fewer benefits than Canadians in other provinces. Why
didn't John Tory stand up today against that unfairness?" said Smitherman.
Tory failed to say he would press the federal government for:
- Fairness for workers who are unemployed or need skills training
- Matching funds for economic investments like the Next Generation Jobs
- Fair share of the MoveOntario 2020 transit plan
"You have to question the judgment of someone who wants to be a leader
but doesn't seize every opportunity to champion Ontario and fight for
fairness. He was a real lunch bag letdown," said Smitherman.
