TORONTO, May 27 /CNW/ - John Holmberg of Bethany will receive a Fire
Safety Award from the Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety Council at a ceremony
on June 3, 2009 in Toronto. The annual Fire Safety Awards recognize
outstanding contributions to fire protection and prevention in Ontario.
As Manager of Devil's Elbow ski area, John Holmberg has always been
supportive of fire and life safety programs. After a fire safety inspection by
Kawartha Lakes Fire & Rescue, Holmberg not only complied with the requirements
of the Ontario Fire Code, but went beyond them to ensure the property and
surrounding rural area were protected from fire. The existence of a large pond
allowed for the installation of a sprinkler system into a building on the
property, an on-site fire hydrant and an extension of underground piping to
the main road so that the fire service could access it all year for other
properties in the area. In addition to these efforts, Holmberg has supported
events including the EMS public access defibrillator training, the annual Ski
with Sparky Fire and Emergency Services Day and hosted numerous displays about
fire extinguisher training, fire prevention and Risk Watch.
"Mr. Holmberg's partnership with Kawartha Lakes Fire & Rescue Service has
not only increased the level of fire safety where he works, but also in the
surrounding community where people live," said Ontario Fire Marshal Pat Burke.
"By incorporating fire safety into home, work and play, Mr. Holmberg is
ensuring that safety should always be on everyone's mind."
Fire departments throughout the province nominated individuals and
organizations for this year's awards; 20 recipients were selected. The
Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services Rick Bartolucci and
Fire Marshal Burke will present the awards at a luncheon ceremony at the
Sutton Place Hotel in Toronto.
