NANAIMO, BC, Jan. 30 /CNW/ - BC Ferry and Marine Workers' Union announces
that Jackie Miller, President, Provincial Executive will retire as leader of
the Union on January 31, 2009.
Miller, who has been on medical leave for six months, is compelled, due
to ill health and the requirements of the BCFMWU Constitution, to elect the
option of retiring out of the office of the President. In returning to BC
Ferries, Miller will continue in her role as Co-Chair of the joint BC
Ferries/BCFMWU safety program, "SailSafe", until her official retirement from
BC Ferries on May 31, 2009.
Richard Goode, 1st Vice President, has been sitting in as Acting
President and will succeed Miller on February 1, 2009. He will complete the
three-year term as President.
The Union meets for its Triennial Convention in April, at which time it
will nominate a new Provincial Executive to serve for the next three-year term
commencing June 1, 2009.
"It has been my duty and my honour to serve as leader of the fine,
dedicated unionized workforce of BC Ferries," Mrs. Miller said. "The last five
and a half years have not always been easy ones, but the membership has always
stood by me and their Provincial Executive, and together we have sustained
ourselves through tough political and economic times."
