It's in the Jeans! Ivanhoe Cambridge Honours Ryerson Student With Prestigious Retail Award of Up To $150,000 For Denim Diva Retail Concept

TORONTO, Jan. 30 /CNW/ - Canada's newest retail entrepreneur, Amber
Kelly, today received the distinguished Ivanhoe Cambridge Retail Evolution
Program Award for her innovative retail concept Denim Diva. In search of the
country's retail visionaries, the entrepreneurial program challenged Ryerson
University School of Retail Management students to develop a new and
innovative retail concept, submitting a proposal and business plan to a panel
of shopping centre industry experts for consideration. Truly an unparalleled
opportunity for a young entrepreneur entering the retail sector, Kelly's
winning Denim Diva proposal addresses the significant challenge for women in
the ongoing search for the perfect pair of jeans, providing custom fitting
through knowledgeable fashion consultants and on-site virtual model
technology.
"I am thrilled to receive this opportunity from Ivanhoe Cambridge, and
have the chance to turn my idea into reality," says Kelly. "Denim Diva is all
about giving women choice, and this award will give me the industry support
and resources needed to bring this concept to Canadian women." For Ivanhoe
Cambridge and Ryerson University School of Retail Management this program is a
valuable one, helping encourage students to explore their creative, retail
business ideas in an informed environment. "We are looking forward to working
with Amber to develop her concept further, and are confident this will bring
added value to the customers at one of our shopping centre locations," adds
George Fiddler, Senior Vice President, Central Region, Ivanhoe Cambridge.
This first year of competition involved a detailed judging process,
narrowing the field to five exceptional finalists. Each finalist presented
their business plan to the judging panel, and after careful review, Kelly was
named the recipient of this retail opportunity of a lifetime; up to $150,000
toward starting up her own retail concept, inside one of Ivanhoe Cambridge's
high profile shopping centre locations in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).
The other finalists in the Retail Evolution Program were: Katrina
Fitz-Andrews for her Rock & Royalty concept, Katherine Hui for her C'mere
Goodboy dog apparel concept, Stephen Maciejowski for his home
accessories/furniture store concept, and Chris Clemance and Edyta Humecka for
their Fashion Forward Runway Couture concept.
"The School of Retail Management at Ryerson University is thrilled to
partner with Ivanhoe Cambridge to deliver the Retail Evolution Program to its
students," comments Elizabeth Evans, Director of the School of Retail
Management, Faculty of Business, Ryerson University. Our strong relationship
with the retail industry is an integral part of our students' education in
preparing them for the business-world while helping to build an exciting and
vital domestic retail sector in Canada. I am very proud of the hard work and
innovative ideas displayed by all of the students who participated in this
program," adds Evans.
The Retail Evolution Program was developed by Ivanhoe Cambridge to
introduce new retail concepts to the industry, and support young entrepreneurs
in the community, helping to build an exciting domestic retail sector in
Canada. In addition to the financial award, students will receive valuable
guidance from retail industry insiders, in the fields of leasing, marketing,
design and construction, legal, and finance. The Retail Evolution Program is
the first of its kind, giving unprecedented access to expertise while
providing financial support to help ensure success.
