It's "Earth Month" at Walmart Canada



    
    Company continues commitment to environmental sustainability and expands
    advocacy to customers
    

    MISSISSAUGA, ON, April 13 /CNW/ - Walmart Canada is celebrating
sustainability month-long, as a company and with its customers, as part of its
second annual Earth Month celebration. During April, the company will make
several announcements in the area of sustainability and promote environmental
awareness and products in-store to its customers.
    This year, Walmart's global operations, from China to Argentina, are
joining Canada and the U.S. in the celebration for the first time.
    "Walmart Canada is committed to sustainability every day, but April is
our formal celebration with customers and our opportunity to advocate
environmentally preferable products to the over one million customers that
walk through our doors every day," said Jim Thompson, senior vice president of
operations at Walmart Canada. "By featuring environmentally preferable
products prominently in our stores and by bringing them to customers at
everyday low prices, we're making it easier and affordable for customers to
incorporate sustainable practices into their lifestyles this month and in the
future."
    The company's forthcoming flyer will include environmentally preferable
products, from organic cotton sheets and bamboo towels, to eco rugs and
environmentally preferable cleaning products. For the first time, Walmart
Canada is giving customers Rollback price reductions on many of these products
to make them even more affordable.
    Walmart Canada unofficially kicked off Earth Month by participating in
Earth Hour on March 28. The company reduced its sales floor lighting by
one-third, in all but a few stores nationally, as a symbolic gesture of its
wider commitment to reducing its environmental footprint and promoting
sustainability among stakeholders.
    Also as part of Earth Month, the company recently announced the adoption
of a zero waste program, at its home office, and the expansion of its purchase
of renewable electricity through Bullfrog Power, Canada's leading provider of
100 per cent green electricity.
    These initiatives are part of a wider sustainability focus for the
company. Since 2005, Walmart has been actively involved in environmental
sustainability and working towards three long-term goals globally and in
Canada:

    
    1.  To produce zero waste;
    2.  To be powered 100 per cent by renewable energy; and,
    3.  To make more environmentally preferable products available to
        customers.
