Iraq - US army arrests Shiite TV station's news editor

MONTREAL, Feb. 26 /CNW Telbec/ - A US army unit raided the premises of
the satellite TV station Al-Furat in the east Baghdad neighbourhood of
Al-Karadiya on 23 February, arresting its news editor, Hafodh Al-Beshara, and
his son. The station is owned by the Supreme Islamic Iraqi Council (SIIC), the
largest party in the ruling coalition. The US military said Beshara's arrest
was not linked to his work as a journalist and that he was suspected of having
information about "Iranian-sponsored criminal activity." Today a US military
spokesman said Beshara would be questioned within the next 48 hours. The
station's director described his arrest as provocation.
