Invitation - U.S.-based schooner Lois McClure arrives in the Port of Montreal

    MONTREAL, July 16 /CNW Telbec/ - On Thursday, July 17, 2008, at
10:00 a.m., we invite you to join us in a press conference attended by
officials from New York, Vermont and Montreal on board the canal schooner,
Lois McClure, at the Jacques Cartier Basin in the Vieux Port. On its trip back
along the St. Lawrence from the Quebec City 400th celebration, the Lois
McClure, will be in Montreal to celebrate North America's most important
interconnected waterway that links the history of Quebec and the neighbouring
states of New York and Vermont, and more generally the history of Canada and
the United States. The water highway includes the St. Lawrence, the Richelieu
River, Lake Champlain and the Hudson River.
The schooner is the flagship for the Lake Champlain 400th Anniversary
Celebration in 2009, 400 years after Samuel de Champlain visited the lake that
bears his name. Montreal is a strategic destination, central in the long
history of trade and commerce in the region.

Public boarding hours are between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. from July 17
to July 22, 2008. This historical family-friendly experience is free of
    charge.

The 88 ft. long wooden schooner is an exact reproduction of
two shipwrecks, intact and still resting on the bottom of Lake Champlain. The
schooner has welcomed over 15,000 visitors to date in this 2008 tour. Visits
are conducted in French and English with Professor Jean Bélisle of Concordia
University joining the crew from the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum of Basin
Harbor, Vermont.
Following the Montreal stop, the schooner will continue on to Sorel
(July 25 - July 27), Chambly (August 1 - 3) and Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu
(August 5 - 7). Please join us on board and learn more about our shared
heritage that evolved along the region's interconnected waterways.
