Introducing Beatrice Vitalité*: Canada's first prebiotic fibre milk beverage

-- One 250 mL glass provides four grams of fibre - as much as a cup
    oatmeal --

TORONTO, March 6 /CNW/ - Beatrice is making it even easier for Canadians
to meet their daily fibre needs with the launch of new Beatrice Vitalité milk
beverage (pronounced Vee-tal-ee-tay) - Canada's first and only prebiotic fibre
milk beverage. Each 250 mL glass of Beatrice Vitalité contains four grams of
fibre per serving, or 16 per cent of the recommended daily fibre intake.
"Canadians are already drinking milk every day for its many nutritional
health benefits, including calcium and vitamin D," says Gina Sunderland,
Registered Dietitian. "Now, families can enjoy a great tasting milk beverage
and easily add a significant amount of fibre to their diets too."

Fuel up with fibre for good gut health!

Most people don't think about their food once they finish eating - but
there are a number of intricate processes that need to take place to ensure
your body converts last night's supper into the nutrients it needs - and fibre
plays a major role!
When food reaches the stomach, it gets stored, mixed and then emptied
into the small intestine.(1) The food is digested in the small intestine and
the contents are again mixed and pushed forward. As this forward progression
continues, fibre cleans our intestines and helps our bowels function better.
It also slows digestion, helps remove toxins from our bodies, and can even
help with weight loss by actually reducing appetite.
Health Canada recommends that Canadians consume approximately 25 grams
(as much as 38 grams for males over 19) of dietary fibre per day. In fact,
many people only get half the amount of fibre needed to be healthy.(2)
"Today's fast-paced lifestyles often lead to a diet that is lacking in
fibre," says Sunderland. "Many Canadians are consuming large amounts of
refined food ingredients, such as white flour, sugar and salt. Unfortunately,
diets low in fibre have been linked to constipation and gastrointestinal
disorders."

    The pros of prebiotic fibre

So what are prebiotics, and how are they different from probiotics?
Probiotics are live microbiological cultures that can be added to foods
to replenish levels of healthy bacteria that live naturally in our bodies.
They help with digestion and prevent an overgrowth of more harmful organisms.
Prebiotics take things back a nutritional step and simply feed the good
bacteria that already exist in the digestive tract. In other words, prebiotics
give your body the building blocks to manufacture its own healthy bacteria
naturally for good gut health. 'Pre' helps the 'pro' grow!
Each 250 mL glass of Beatrice Vitalité contains four grams of the
prebiotic fibre inulin - a natural, soluble fibre sourced from the chicory
plant that is undetectable in the flavour and texture of milk.
In fact, one serving of Beatrice Vitalité is equivalent to the same
amount of fibre in the following foods:

    - 1 cup of oatmeal
    - 1 slice of whole grain bread
    - 1 pear with skin
    - 1 cup of strawberries
    - 1 small apple with skin
    - 1/2 cup of peas
    - 1 medium baked potato
    - 3 figs
    - 1/4 cup of almonds

Enjoy Beatrice Vitalité with a bowl of cereal or mixed with fruit and
yogourt in a smoothie for an added fibre fuel-up!
