International Experts Meet In Geneva for the World Cancer Congress, 27 to 31 August 2008

    Facts about cancer
    
    -- There are more than 11 million new cases and close to 8 million deaths
worldwide per year due to cancer.
    -- By 2030, this will increase to almost 16 million cases and around 11.5
million deaths per year, if current trends continue.
    
    -- Cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide.
    -- Cancer kills more than malaria, AIDS and tuberculosis combined.
    
    The World Cancer Congress is taking place in Geneva, Switzerland, from 27
to 31 August 2008. The congress will bring together about 2,500 cancer
specialists and advocates from around the world.

    
    The scientific programme will cover:
    

    
    -- Cancer prevention and control
    -- Tobacco control
    -- Knowledge transfer (research, detection, treatment)
    -- Supportive care
    -- Capacity building
    


    
    Highlights will include:
    
    -- Opening ceremony: In the presence of Mr. Pascal Couchepin, President
of the Swiss Confederation, Dr. Tabare Vazquez, President of Uruguay, and Dr.
Margaret Chan, Director-General of the World Health Organization.
    -- Cervical cancer:  Top experts will present new data and explain why
the new era in cervical cancer prevention provides unprecedented hope for
controlling the disease in the developing world.
    -- Global survey: Preliminary results of a new UICC/Gallup survey of 29
countries provide the first international comparison of beliefs about cancer
risk factors, revealing the level of knowledge and misconceptions.
    -- World Cancer Summit: A high-level panel of international policymakers
and experts discuss how to overcome the key challenges faced in combating
cancer particularly in low income countries. Summit participants are expected
to agree on targets for 2020 and define priority steps needed to meet those
targets. The summit is co-chaired by former Irish President and human rights
advocate Mary Robinson and Dr. Franco Cavalli, UICC President.
    -- Reel lives UICC film festival: 33 compelling films from 16 countries
are competing for awards in 4 categories: personal stories, documentaries,
educational/organizational films and public service announcements. Includes
Oscar-winning documentary "Freeheld".
    The Congress is organized by the International Union Against Cancer
(UICC), the leading global non-governmental organization devoted exclusively
to cancer.
