Impaired Driver caught smuggling Cigarettes



    MALLORYTOWN, ON, Feb. 5 /CNW/ - On Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009 at
approximately 3:45 PM, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) stopped two vans
which were found to be loaded with contraband cigarettes near the Mallorytown
Service Centre, off highway 401 near Brockville, Ontario. As a result, a joint
investigation was conducted with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP)
Kingston Customs and Excise Section and the Canada Border Services Agency
(CBSA).
    Police found both vans to contain approximately 30 cases of contraband
tobacco products each. Generally, each case contains approximately 50 cartons
of cigarettes or 50 individual bags with 200 cigarettes each. The drivers of
the vans were arrested for possession of unstamped tobacco products under the
Excise Act 2001, the tobacco was seized as well as the vans.
    In addition to the tobacco charges, one of the drivers, Ahmed Osman
Sayed, age 47, of Ottawa, Ontario was also charged by the OPP with impaired
driving. Sayed was to appear in Brockville Court on Wednesday, February 4th,
2009. The second driver, a male in his 20's also from Ottawa, Ontario was
released and charges are pending.
    "The RCMP and our partner agencies continue to notice an increase in the
distribution of contraband cigarettes throughout this area" stated Sgt. Dan
Somers of the Kingston RCMP Customs and Excise Section, "the sale of
contraband is driven purely by greed and in this case, there was a total
disregard for public safety. If anyone has any information on anyone involved
in the contraband cigarette trade, they are encouraged to contact the RCMP,
CBSA, their local police department or Crime Stoppers."
