IKEA Canada Named as One of Canada's Greenest Employers

    IKEA recognized for environmental leadership

BURLINGTON, ON, April 16 /CNW/ - As part of Canada's top 100 Employer
competition, Mediacorp Canada Inc. has named IKEA Canada as one of Canada's
Greenest Employers. IKEA is the only retailer to be honoured with this title.
Now in its 3rd year, this special designation recognizes the employers that
lead the nation in making environmental values part of their organizational
culture.
"Winners of this competition have developed exceptional earth-friendly
initiatives," says Tony Meeham, Publisher, Media Corp Canada Inc. "These
companies are attracting employees and customers because of their
environmental leadership."

The criteria that IKEA is being recognized for are:

    1. Regularly conducts environmental audits to ensure its stores continue
to maintain and improve their internal efforts to recycle, reduce
        waste and save energy

    2. Has a longstanding initiative (called Pick a Tree, Plant a Tree) in
partnership with Tree Canada, which is a non-profit organization that
has planted over 70 million trees since 1992 - IKEA Canada employees
have planted over 14,000 trees - and directs a portion of the
revenue from every Christmas tree sold towards planting saplings
across the country the following spring

    3. Is one of the first major Canadian retailers to introduce a five-cent
charge for plastic bags at it stores in 2007 - the company surveyed
customers (finding that over 70 percent would support such an
initiative) and then followed-up with the five-cent "Bag-a-Bag"
program, which has reduced plastic bag usage by 90 percent.

    4. Maintains recycling depots at Canadian store locations where
customers can drop-off compact fluorescent light bulbs (which contain
low levels of mercury), halogen bulbs and old batteries - a free
service for customers who can drop-off all their used bulbs and
        batteries - even non-IKEA brands

    5. Recently introduced preferred green parking spaces for customers who
drive hybrids, fuel efficient and electric vehicles

    6. Internationally, the parent company maintains a strict sourcing
policy for its suppliers of wood products and does not accept
illegally felled wood or wood from intact natural forests - and
requires all suppliers to document the origin of their wood and
supports this policy with in-house forestry specialists who monitor
and work closely with suppliers and forestry companies (IKEA's long
term goal is to source all wood for its products from Forest
        Stewardship Council (FSC) certified sources.)

"At IKEA, we have a strong commitment to environmentally responsible
practices and we regularly engage our coworkers to participate in our
efforts," says Kerri Molinaro, President, IKEA Canada. "We know that our
coworkers care about the environment as much as we do, and it is through their
efforts that we are able to bring these programs to life."
