Leading Online Bookmaker Releases Odds on 'the Last Great Race on Earth'
WILLEMSTAD, Curacao, Feb. 25 /CNW/ -- Covering 1,161 miles of hazardous
Alaskan wilderness, with punishing sub-zero temperatures, the Iditarod Trail
Sled Dog Race clearly deserves its title as the Last Great Race on Earth. With
just days to go until the race on Sunday 8th March 2009, PinnacleSports.com
today announced odds on this unique test of human and canine endurance.
Iditarod commemorates an historic run using sled dogs in 1925 to deliver
lifesaving diphtheria serum to Nome, (the race finish), and every Iditarod
winner in its 36 year history is regarded as a hero.
The internet's leading sports betting site, PinnacleSports.com, currently
lists the two time defending Iditarod champion, Lance Mackey, as the betting
favourite with odds of 1.581(*) (bet $100 to return $158). All other Mushers are
included in the Field, with odds of 2.620(*) (bet $100 to return $262).
Cancer survivor, Mackey, won the 1,000 mile Yukon Quest just weeks before
his 2007 Iditarod victory, a feat considered impossible ... then showed it was
no fluke by repeating the double in 2008. Mackey's decision not to compete in
the 2009 Yukon Quest, raised some eyebrows, and his great rival Jeff King, is
one of the most likely mushers to take advantage should Mackey have lost his
King - a four time Iditarod winner - pushed Mackey all the way in 2008,
but the 53 year old was literally caught napping, as Mackey pushed on, while
his rival slept; King has vowed that won't happen again. Canadian, Hans Gatt,
could be a live challenger having dropped out midway through this year's Yukon
Quest, because his team was running so well. Gatt never better than sixth in
Iditarod believes this is his best chance for success.
"With entrants competing both against each other and the unforgiving
elements, Iditarod truly justifies the tag of the Last Great Race on Earth",
said Simon Noble, PinnacleSports.com's spokesperson. "At PinnacleSports.com,
we pride ourselves on offering the most competitive odds on the widest range
of betting markets available, but we are always looking for unique markets and
Iditarod certainly fits the bill."
