Hydro-Québec presents its Sustainability Report 2010

MONTREAL, May 10 /CNW Telbec/ - Hydro-Québec is proud to present its Sustainability Report 2010, which describes the company's many initiatives in the area of sustainable development.

"Hydro-Québec's vision for sustainability goes well beyond issues of environmental management. It also reflects our strong desire to give our partners an opportunity to express their expectations and concerns, while making sure we contribute to Québec's economic vitality. In that respect, our projects must be profitable, environmentally acceptable and favorably received by local communities," explained Stella Leney of Hydro-Québec's Directrice Principale - Environnement et affaires corporatives.

A few highlights

GHG emissions avoided: positive results
The report contains a summary of GHG emissions related to the company's activities. Thanks to Hydro-Québec's exports, GHG emissions avoided were 16 times greater than those related to its activities.

In 2010, Hydro-Québec's activities helped avoid more than 9 million tonnes of CO2 emissions: 13.6 thousand tonnes were saved through energy efficiency and 9,050 thousand tonnes were avoided thanks to our sales outside Québec, which replaced power generated by fossil fuels on external markets.

In an effort to reduce GHG emissions from its vehicle fleet, Hydro-Québec replaced 236 light-duty vehicles with more energy-efficient models. This measure reduced annual fuel consumption by 72,305 litres and cut GHG emissions by 180 t CO2 eq.

With its partners McGill University, the Université du Québec à Montréal and Environnement Illimité, Hydro-Québec conducted a large-scale study in 2010. The study concluded that a generating station located in a boreal region is one of the lowest-emitting generation options. In Québec, average emissions from hydropower are comparable to those from wind power, and the level of gross emissions from reservoirs is similar to that of natural lakes.

A sustained effort in energy efficiency
With recurrent energy savings of 5.3 TWh, of which 989 GWh were achieved in 2010, Hydro-Québec is confident that it will it  meet the 11-TWh target set for 2015.

Approximately 1.2 million personalized recommendation reports have been produced since the launch of the ENERGY WISE Home Diagnostic in 2004, for potential savings of 368 GWh per year, which is the consumption equivalent of approximately 21,600 households. Through their participation in the program, close to 1,000 local or regional communities received $10.4 million from Hydro-Québec to carry out community projects related to the environment, culture, sports, recreation, etc.

Also, in 2010, the Energy Efficiency Retrofit Program for Low-Income Households generated savings of 13.2 GWh, exceeding our target of 9.8 GWh.

Responsible development of renewable energies
Through its research, innovation and demonstration activities, Hydro-Québec participates in advancing technologies linked to various renewable energy sources. Hydropower development continues through the work being done at the Romaine complex and the Eastmain-1-A/Sarcelle/Rupert jobsites. Moreover, we selected 12 bids (totaling 291.4 MW) for the purchase of wind power, 6 contracts were approved for the supply of 52.9 MW of electricity produced by biomass, and we contributed to the deploying of two hydrokinetic prototypes in the Saint-Laurent, near Montréal.

Noteworthy in 2010: the U.S. National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) recognized hydropower as a clean, renewable energy source. Hydro-Québec, one of the world's foremost hydropower utilities,  was  named Utility of the Year by Electric Light & Power magazine, published by PennWell Corp.

Breakthroughs in ground transportation electrification
With an eye to the future of ground transportation electrification, Hydro-Québec is building on such considerable assets as clean, renewable energy, a reliable system, acknowledged expertise and promising technology.

In the area of batteries, we made spectacular progress, including enhanced power and battery life, as well as reduced charging time.

Also, Hydro-Québec subsidiary TM4 delivered nearly a hundred powertrains to Indian automaker Tata Motors.
