Housing Starts Up in August

MONCTON, NB, Sept. 11 /CNW/ - Total housing starts in New Brunswick's
urban centres for the month of August were ahead of last year's level.
According to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation's preliminary data(1),
residential starts totaled 382 units in August, compared to 274 units during
the same period in 2006.
"A significant increase in single starts contributed to higher overall
starts during the month of August", said Claude Gautreau, CMHC's Senior Market
Analyst for New Brunswick. In urban centres across the province, single starts
rose to 230 units in August, surpassing last year's monthly total by 79 units.
Multiple starts in the province's urban areas were also ahead of last
year's pace for the month of August. With a strong showing in both Saint John
and Fredericton, 152 multiple starts were recorded in August of this year, up
from last year's monthly total of 123 units. "Due to a double-digit decline in
multiple units, total year-to-date starts have not kept pace with last year's
level", continued Gautreau.
In urban centres across Canada, total housing starts in August exceeded
last year's total by 6 per cent, up to 16,771 from last year's total of
15,834. Single-detached starts declined 2 per cent to 8,103 units compared to
8,298 in 2006, while multiple unit starts increased 15 per cent to
8,668 units, up from last year total of 7,536. In Atlantic Canada, 999 starts
were recorded in August 2007 compared to 723 units during the same period in
2006.
