Housing Starts Rise in September

MONCTON, NB, - Oct. 9 /CNW/ - Total housing starts in New Brunswick's
urban centres for the month of September surpassed last year's level.
According to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation's preliminary data(1),
residential starts totaled 367 units in September, compared to 295 units
during the same period in 2006.
"A significant year-over-year increase in multiple starts in September
led to the overall increase during the month", said Claude Gautreau, CMHC's
Senior Market Analyst for New Brunswick. In urban centres across the province,
multiple starts were up to 190 units in September, exceeding last year's
monthly total by 55 units. Single starts in the province's urban areas also
increased during the month of September with 177 units, an increase of
17 units compared to last year's September total of 160 units.
Year-to-date, single starts have surpassed last year's total of
1,101 units by 122 units or 11.1 per cent, while multiple starts fell by
6 per cent, down to 1,026 units compared to last year's total of 1,092 units.
"With an increase in both single and multiple starts during the third quarter,
total year-to-date residential starts were slightly ahead of last year's pace
at the end of September", continued Gautreau.
In urban centres across Canada, total housing starts in September
exceeded last year's total by 44 per cent, up to 22,031 from last year's total
of 15,322. Single-detached starts declined 4 per cent to 8,226 units compared
to 8,612 in 2006, while multiple starts more than doubled, up to 13,805 units
compared to last year's total of 6,710. In Atlantic Canada, 1,029 starts were
recorded in September 2007 compared to 734 units during the same period in
2006.
