Housing Starts Rise in October

MONCTON, NB, Nov. 8 /CNW/ - Total housing starts in New Brunswick's urban
centres for the month of October were ahead of last year's level. According to
Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation's preliminary data(1), 263 residential
starts were recorded in October, compared to 234 units during the same month
in 2006.
"A significant year-over-year increase in single starts during the month
October was responsible for the overall increase in residential starts", said
Claude Gautreau, CMHC's Senior Market Analyst for New Brunswick. In the
province's urban centres, single starts rose to 171 units in October, 28 units
ahead of last year's total of 143 units. Among New Brunswick's large urban
centres, single starts increased in both Saint John and Moncton, with a slight
decline in Fredericton.
Multiple starts in the province's urban areas were virtually unchanged
during the month of October with 92 units compared to 91 last year.
Year-to-date, multiple starts trailed last year's total at the end of October
with 1,118 units compared to 1,183 last year. "The year-to-date increase in
total starts has been bolstered by an increased number of single starts in
2007", continued Gautreau.
In Canadian urban centers, there were 16,057 total housing starts in
October - a 9 per cent decrease from the 17,595 starts in October, 2006.
Construction starts of single-detached homes decreased 10 per cent from
8,220 in October last year to 7,370 this year. Multiple starts slowed by 7 per
cent from 9,375 units in October 2006, to 8,687 units this year. In the
Atlantic region, 757 new units were started in October 2007 compared to 604
units during the same period last year.
