Housing Starts Rise in January

MONCTON, NB, Feb. 8 /CNW/ - According to Canada Mortgage and Housing
Corporation's preliminary data(1), residential construction in January
produced a total of 175 starts in New Brunswick's urban centres, compared to
131 units during the same period last year.
"Total urban starts in January were higher than last year due to
increased activity in Saint John", said Claude Gautreau, CMHC's Senior Market
Analyst for New Brunswick.
Single starts in urban areas were up in January with a total of 78 units,
compared to last year's total of 57 units for the month. In Fredericton,
single starts increased by 5 units to 25 units while Moncton experienced a
decline of 9 units for a total of 15 starts in January. Single starts in
Saint John increased from 11 units in January of 2007 to 30 units during the
same period this year. "Despite adverse weather conditions this winter, which
builders have mostly been able to avoid in recent years, residential
construction activity was off to a solid start in January", continued
Gautreau.
In the province's urban centres, 97 multiple starts were recorded in
January of 2008, compared to 74 units in January 2007. Multiple starts
increased significantly in Saint John, declined in Moncton, and remained
relatively unchanged in Fredericton.
In urban centers across Canada, total housing starts recorded in January
declined by 11 per cent, down to 12,023 from last year's total of 13,583.
Single-detached starts decreased 16 per cent to 4,402 units, while multiple
unit starts were down 9 per cent from 8,361 units last year to 7,621 units
this year. In the Atlantic region, 361 new units were started in January 2008
compared to 503 units during the same period in 2007.
