Housing Starts Rise in December

MONCTON, NB, Jan. 9 /CNW/ - Total housing starts in New Brunswick's urban
centres for the month of December exceeded last year's level. According to
Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation's preliminary data(1), 233 residential
starts were recorded in December, up from 201 units during the same month in
2006.
"As was the case throughout most of the year, single starts remained
strong December and exceeded last year's total for the same period", said
Claude Gautreau, CMHC's Senior Market Analyst for New Brunswick. In the
province's urban centres, 137 single starts were recorded in December, up
44 units compared to last year's total for the month.
Multiple starts in the province's urban centres declined in December with
93 units compared to 108 last year. Year-to-date, multiple starts trailed last
year's total by 5.5 per cent with 1,330 units compared to 1,408 last year.
Fourth quarter totals were comparable to the January to December trend with a
higher single starts and a decline in multiple starts compared to the same
period last year. "Unfavorable weather conditions in December had little
impact on residential construction as new home starts exceeded last year's
monthly total", continued Gautreau.
In urban centres across Canada, 11,176 total housing starts were recorded
in December, a 20 per cent decline from the 14,019 starts in December 2006.
Single-detached starts decreased 4 per cent to 6,098 units, while multiple
unit starts were down 34 per cent: from 7,650 last year to 5,078 units this
year. In the Atlantic region, 233 new units were started in December 2007
compared to 201 units during the same period in 2006.
