Housing Starts Rebound in March

MONCTON, NB, April 11 /CNW/ - Total housing starts in New Brunswick's
urban centers for the month of March surpassed last year's level. According to
Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation's preliminary data(1), residential
starts totaled 76 units compared to 45 units during the same period last year.
"Unlike the first two months of the year, residential starts in March
exceeded last year's level", said Claude Gautreau, CMHC's Senior Market
Analyst for New Brunswick. In urban centers across the province, 40 multiple
starts were recorded in 2007, a significant increase compared to last year's
total of 7 units. The majority of this total was recorded in Saint John.
Single starts in urban areas were essentially unchanged in March with
36 units compared to 38 last year. Total urban starts at the end of the first
quarter trailed last year's total by approximately 10 per cent, due to a
decline in single starts. "The decline in residential starts for the first
quarter of the year is primarily due to a decline in single starts, as
multiple starts have remained virtually unchanged", continued Gautreau.
In urban centers across Canada, total housing starts in March decreased
by 17 per cent, down to 12,581 from last year's total of 15,181.
Single-detached starts declined to 5,537 units compared to 6,219 in 2006,
while multiple unit starts declined 21 per cent from 8,962 last year to 7,044
units this year. In the Atlantic region, 169 starts were recorded in March
2007 compared to 279 units during the same period in 2006.
