HORWATH FACT CHECK: She makes it up, here's the truth

TORONTO, Sept. 27, 2011 /CNW/ - In the leaders debate tonight, Andrea Horwath will stick to the same disappointing talking points, most of them made up.  Will she make up another uncosted $1 Billion pledge to university students?  Or will she finally unveil an education policy aimed at elementary and high schools?  What we know for sure is she will more often than not, choose Tim Hudak's side.  Here's some of what she will say, and the truth.

Taxes:  Horwath will say the NDP opposes the HST
TRUTH:  Andrea Horwath railed against the HST for years and promised to scrap it, then waffled, then pledged to keep it on just about everything. (NDP Platform)

HST off Hydro:  Horwath will say the NDP will take the HST off hydro
TRUTH:  Andrea Horwath won't take the HST off hydro until 2015, two elections from now. (NDP Platform, pg. 44)

Education:  Horwath will say the NDP has an education plan
TRUTH:  Andrea Horwath voted against funding Full Day Kindergarten and has no plan for elementary or secondary school kids. She has repeatedly promised a full education platform, but ignored kids in schools, focusing only on bake sales.  Nothing about student success. Nothing. (NDP Platform, every single page)

Clean Energy Jobs: Horwath will say the NDP will keep the microFIT program and respect existing clean energy contracts.
TRUTH:  The disappointing NDP platform pledges "contracts with private power producers are not the way we'll do business." (NDP Platform, pg. 17).  By refusing to partner with the private sector, Andrea Horwath will kill all momentum in the industry and snuff out Ontario's booming clean energy economy.

Job Creators:  Horwath will say the NDP would reward job creators
TRUTH:  Andrea Horwath will impose a crushing $9 billion tax hike on Ontario business. (NDP Platform, pg 24).  Ontarians remember what the NDP did to Ontario last time - an average of 1300 jobs lost every single month for five years.

Change:  Andrea Horwath will say she's a positive, progressive alternative
TRUTH:  Instead of supporting positive, progressive legislation, Andrea Horwath played politics with Tim Hudak - voting with him 183 times - against progressive legislation like increasing the minum wage, the $1,100 / year Ontario Child Benefit, funding full-day kindergarten, and banning pesticide use on our lawns. (Hansard)

Northern Ontario:  Andrea Horwath will promise "respect for the north"
TRUTH:  Andrea Horwath will promise one thing to northern Ontario and another in southern Ontario.  She talks about jobs in the north, but voted against job creating investments like subway cars for Bombardier in Thunder Bay.  She pledges to scrap the Far North while in the north, but would impose a "moratorium on development north of 51 degrees" in her Climate Change plan.  And she voted against the Endangered Species Act in Toronto, but the NDP promises to scrap it in the north.
