Honouring Ontario's Fallen Firefighters

Premier McGuinty Presents "Tribute To The Fallen" Plaques To Families

QUEEN'S PARK, Sept. 7 /CNW/ - Premier Dalton McGuinty today commemorated
the bravery, heroism and sacrifice of Ontario's fallen firefighters by
presenting tribute plaques to their families at a special ceremony at Queen's
Park.
"Firefighters show tremendous courage and compassion every day to keep
Ontario families safe," said Premier McGuinty. "On behalf of 13 million
Ontarians, I want to thank our firefighters and I want the families of the
fallen heroes we are honouring today to know that we will never forget the
sacrifice these brave men and women made."
The "Tribute to the Fallen" plaques were created in 2006 to honour
firefighters, police officers and members of the Canadian Armed Forces who
have died in the line of duty since 2002. Since then, 42 Ontario firefighters
have died on the job or from fire-related illnesses.
Premier McGuinty was joined by Community Safety and Correctional Services
Minister Monte Kwinter to present the tributes.
"Ontario's firefighters shoulder a heavy responsibility to protect the
community -- and they do their jobs with tremendous courage and commitment,"
said Kwinter. "Today, we honour those firefighters who paid the ultimate
sacrifice and we thank all the men and women in uniform who continue to put
their lives on the line every day."
"I consider it a privilege to participate in today's ceremony marking the
selfless and courageous acts firefighters make while protecting Ontario's
communities," said Fred LeBlanc, President of the Ontario Professional Fire
Fighters Association. "It is particularly special to witness the "Tribute to
the Fallen" plaques being presented to the families of our fallen
firefighters. On behalf of the 10,000 professional firefighters across the
province, I extend our appreciation for this tribute."
"Today, we grieve for the loss of our brave firefighters, but we also
celebrate their lives," said Premier McGuinty. "Their selfless commitment to
helping others has left behind a powerful legacy that is an inspiration to us
all."
