Home Hardware Stores Limited Celebrates Maple Leaf Day with Nation-wide Tree Plantings

ST. JACOBS, ON, Sept. 25 /CNW/ - To celebrate Maple Leaf Day, Home
Hardware Dealers will be planting trees in more than 20 communities across the
country. Celebrations were highlighted with the flagship tree planting
ceremony at Broadmoor Lake Park in Sherwood Park, Alberta today.
"During our nine years partnering with Tree Canada, Home Hardware Dealers
have had more than 250 tree plantings," said Paul Straus, Vice President and
CEO, Home Hardware Stores Limited. "There are more than 1,000 Home Hardware
stores in communities from coast to coast to coast and Home Dealers are proud
to be able to give back to those who support us. Ultimately, these tree
plantings impact wildlife habitat, reduce the effects of global warming, and
provide greenery for communities to enjoy for years to come and we're happy to
make such a significant gift to the country."
Maple Leaf Day, celebrated annually on the last Wednesday in September
during National Forest Week, is a day Canadians are asked to reflect on the
link between their lives and the maple leaf - a symbol of Canadians'
historical, economic and environmental link to trees. Maple Leaf Day is
celebrated across the country with tree dedications, plantings, educational
workshops, outdoor education walks, interpretive days, schoolyard plantings
and seminars.
Sherwood Park, Alberta was selected as the Maple Leaf Day launch site
because it is the site of this year's Canadian Urban Forest Conference. In
honour of Maple Leaf Day, six large silver maples will be planted at Broadmoor
Lake Park and a plaque will be installed to commemorate the partnership
between Home Hardware Stores Limited and Tree Canada.
"It is through the generous support of sponsors like Home Hardware that
we have been able to plant more than 14,800 trees and shrubs in communities
across Canada," said Michael Rosen, President of Tree Canada. "With its
community presence across the country and its commitment to help urban
forests, Home Hardware is the perfect fit for our organization. Home
Hardware's support of Tree Canada's Maple Leaf Day has also helped communities
replace trees lost to disasters such as insect outbreaks, forest fires and
windstorms."
Home Hardware has partnered with Tree Canada for nine years, improving
green spaces across the country. In 2008, the following Home Hardware stores
