Home Hardware Congratulates 14th Annual Communities in Bloom Award Winners



    ST. JACOBS, ON, Sept. 22 /CNW/ - Home Hardware Stores Limited, national
sponsor of Communities in Bloom, congratulates the winners of the 2008
competition for their recognition at National Awards Ceremonies held in
Lethbridge, Alberta on September 20th. The awards ceremony took place at the
National Symposium on Parks and Grounds and Awards Ceremonies and recognized
the best communities from coast to coast who participated in the 14th annual
Communities in Bloom program.
    Communities in Bloom, a Canadian organization committed to promoting
community beautification programs through friendly competition, encourages
communities to get residents, businesses and municipalities involved in the
beautification of local parks, homes and public areas. Participating
communities are evaluated by volunteer judges on eight separate criteria:
tidiness, environmental awareness, community involvement, heritage
conservation, urban forest management, landscaped areas, floral displays and
turf and groundcovers.

    Nearly 125 communities participated nationally and more than 450 members
of approximately 80 communities representing all Canadian provinces were in
attendance at the awards ceremony.
    The following communities received criteria awards based on their ability
to illustrate themselves in each of the criteria.

    Waste Management Environmental Awareness      Charlottetown,

    Communities in Bloom Youth Involvement Award: Peterborough, Ontario
    Tree Canada Urban Forestry Award              Calmar, Alberta
    Communities in Bloom Heritage Conservation
    Award:                                        Millet, Alberta
    Canadian Nursery Landscape Association Award: Huntsville, Ontario
    Communities in Bloom Tidiness Award:          London, Ontario
    

    In the international competition, Brampton, ON won in the large category,
Stratford, ON in the medium category and Annapolis Royal, NS in the small
category. Stratford also won the award for Best Blooming Community in Canada
for achieving the highest aggregate score in both the WinterLights
Celebrations and the Communities in Bloom programs for 2008.
    The communities who were awarded top honours in their category (by
population), earning notoriety for their commitment to civic pride,
environmental responsibility and community beautification, are as follows:

    -  1,001 to 3,000: Calmar, AB
    -  3,001 to 5,000: Antigonish, NS
    -  5,001 to 8,000: Goderich, ON
    -  8,001 to 10,000: Dauphin, MB
    -  10,001 to 13,000: Ingersoll, ON
    -  13,001 to 20,000: White Rock, BC
    -  20,001 to 55,000: Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville, QC
    -  55,001 to 155,000: Barrie, ON
    -  Over 300,000: Mississauga, ON
    -  Canadian Forces: 4 Wing Cold Lake, AB
