Holocaust Remembrance Commemoration this Sunday - Keynote Speaker: Baroness Sybille Niemoeller

TORONTO, April 13 /CNW/ - Sybille Niemoeller will be the keynote speaker
at this year's annual Toronto Holocaust Remembrance Commemoration on Sunday
April 15 at Earl Bales Park (Bathurst south of Sheppard under the big tent).
It was Baroness Niemoeller's late husband, Pastor Martin Niemoeller, who
penned the famous quotation "First they came for the Communists, but I was not
a Communist, so I did not speak out. Then they came for the Socialists and the
Trade unionists, but I was neither, so I did not speak out. Then they came for
the Jews, but I was not a Jew so I did not speak out. And when they came for
me, there was no one left to speak out for me." When Pastor Niemoeller married
Sybille Niemoeller, a courageous duo was born.
Sybille's father took a leading role in hiding and transporting Jews to
safety and directed the ill-fated plot to assassinate Hitler on July 20, 1944.
Niemoeller's cousin, Werner von Haeften was shot after being found with two
bombs intended for use against Hitler. As a teen Sybille courageously refused
to join the Hitler Youth and was, as a result, expelled from high school.

Toronto's Holocaust Remembrance Commemoration, one of many taking place
around the world, will also feature a candle lighting ceremony, personal
testimony from Holocaust survivor, Herb Goldstein, and the reading of victims'
names.

Mrs. Niemoeller is available for interviews at (215) 345-0272 on Friday
between 10:00 am - 12:00 pm. and 4:00 - 5:00 pm or E-mail questions to
sinie@aol.com. She will also be available on Sunday, April 15 from 9:45 am to
10:45 am under the tent.
