TORONTO, Feb. 25 /CNW/ - Blowing out the candles on his birthday cake,
Mr. Clean celebrated his big 5-0 by teaming up with Olympic gold medalist and
Canadian hockey hero Cheryl Pounder at a community arena with a challenge to
Canadians. An initiative of Mr. Clean and Febreze, the challenge is a
nation-wide search for a peewee hockey team that demonstrates the most
sportsmanship-like behaviour both on and off the ice.
Cheryl Pounder, a two-time Olympic gold medalist for Canada's Women's
Hockey team, knows what it takes to be one of Canada's best athletes. The
dedication and hard work it took to win on the ice are two of the most
important attributes she hopes to instill in younger hockey players to succeed
off the ice as well.
"As parents and coaches, it's our role to educate our young hockey
players on the importance of good sportsmanship and remind them what playing
clean is all about," says Cheryl Pounder. The "Ultimate Canadian Hockey
Clean-Off" presents kids and coaches with a chance to show how they practice
the real rules of the game - respect, good team work and fair play."
From February 25 to May 31, 2008, Canadian peewee hockey coaches are
asked to submit a 100-word essay that describes why their hockey team is most
deserving of the title "Canada's Cleanest Hockey Team." The winning coach and
team will be awarded $3,000 in equipment and a team award autographed by
Cheryl Pounder to commemorate the win. Each coach will also be told a
"best-kept secret" and receive a team supply of Mr. Clean and Febreze to keep
hockey equipment fresh and clean To enter, the application can be downloaded
from the contest site: www.ultimatecanadianhockeycleanoff.ca.
"We know that hockey is hands down Canada's best-loved sport. Heightened
awareness to "clean up" hockey, especially in the junior levels and younger,
has been a concern surrounding the sport," comments Alan Rego, Manager,
External Relations, Procter & Gamble. "With Mr. Clean celebrating a milestone
year, we wanted to show his "softer" side by collaborating with Febreze and
Cheryl Pounder to educate Canadians on the essentials of clean play - on and
off the ice."
To commemorate the occasion, Cheryl Pounder has shared her tried and true
tips and advice for a successful hockey season. Her outlook is based on her
experience playing on a world-class, winning hockey team and her life off the
ice as a hockey instructor to young players.
Ultimate Canadian Clean-Off: Clean Play 101
1. Develop naturally - Goals for the peewee age category are about
having fun, refining individual tactics and learning about team play.
2. Be respectful on and off the ice - Part of becoming a team player is
not only showing respect for your teammates (even when they make
mistakes) but, the competition as well.
3. Check with purpose - There is a big difference between tough and
clean hockey and dirty and aggressive hockey. Be physical when it's
needed to gain puck possession only.
4. Be in control of your emotions - At times, these can get away from us
(both players and coaches alike). Remember to respond within the
rules of the game and put the incident behind you. Re-focus yourself.
5. Care for your equipment - Take pride in wearing your team jersey and
care for the condition of your equipment - both important factors in
helping score goals. A best-kept secret in the hockey community is to
use a spray such as Febreze Fabric Refresher to eliminate odours and
freshen up equipment. To access additional smart and practical
