Hitting the Ground Running Falls at the First Hurdle

Calgary, employers often look to buy experience rather than grow and develop

    It's time we all understand that retaining and growing employees from

senior staff is eventually going to hit where it hurts. Whilst the economy is
booming an organisation can be philosophical and even bullish about meeting
those premiums. However, when the tide turns and the economy contracts, the
folly of many of those recruiting decisions will be felt.
    Finding that senior person can be a nightmare, it may take months. We are
facing a demographic time bomb in Alberta, if not globally. We are losing our
senior technical personnel at alarming rates. Rarely do these talented
individuals fail to see their value, as evidenced by a push for higher
salaries or transition to a consultancy role. It's time we take action to
change the marketplace by increasing skills of our juniors, enabling us to be
less dependant on the dwindling supply of senior talent.
    Effective succession planning and retention strategies are crucial for
the health of any organisation. Not investing in succession planning will
surely lead to more frustration, increased costs, poor service to your
customers and, ultimately, a negative impact on the bottom line. Investing now
with an eye on the future may just ensure that your people are hitting the
ground running and clearing the hurdles.
    The reality is employers must understand this concept clearly and act now
or face dire consequences in the future.
