TORONTO, Aug. 6 /CNW Telbec/ - Hitlab.com's Pamela opened up for
six-time-Grammy-nominated recording artist Akon at Summer Rush 2009 at
Paramount Canada's Wonderland concert, getting her first major taste of
success since being signed to a record deal through the website.
Pamela, a 16-year-old singer from Montreal, Canada, initially rose to
fame after performing in front of Akon at Hitlab's September 2008 Showcase.
Hitlab, a social platform for musicians, promises independent artists a chance
to earn a record deal under either Konvict Muzik or Kon Live Distribution. At
the Showcase, Pamela appeared alongside seven other industry hopefuls and
caught the eye of Akon, who promptly took her under his wing.
Pamela, who at 15 years of age released her debut album 120 Milles a
L'Heure (2007), is set to put out a second album by next year, having spent
the summer working with Akon and his production team in the recording studio.
A duet with Akon, in French, is set to be released. It marks the first time
Akon, a native of Senegal, has sung in French.
Summer Rush 2009 was presented by Toronto radio station Z103.5. Aside
from Akon, performers included Justin Bieber, Danny Fernandes, Marianas
Trench, Massari, and Karl Wolf, and Pitbull.
A world-renowned hip-hop and rhythm-and-blues artist, Akon has become one
of the music industry's most recognized talents. He has been nominated for six
Grammy awards and has had 23 songs chart on the Billboard Hot 100. As a
producer and songwriter, he has worked with Whitney Houston, Gwen Stefani, and
the late Michael Jackson.
A social network portal for artists and listeners alike, Hitlab is
reinventing the music industry with its proprietary DHS (dynamic hit scoring)
technology. DHS determines the hit potential of an uploaded song, measuring,
among other variables, tempo and pitch, while using the past six years' worth
of Billboard Hot 100 singles as a basis of comparison. Through a scoring
system based on DHS scores and fan votes, independent artists vie for one of
eight spots to perform in front of Akon.
The Akon-owned, Montreal-operated website now boasts over 32,000 users.
