"We need to respond now and be ready for the next disaster that strikes."
OTTAWA, Sept. 4 /CNW Telbec/ - The Canadian Red Cross, with the support
of Canada's major banks, is today launching a nation-wide appeal to support
international disaster relief for the more than 235 million people worldwide
affected by recent fires, flooding, earthquake and a category five hurricane.
All of these disasters have struck in only the last two months, leaving
millions of people - in fact, more than seven times the population of Canada -
in urgent need of assistance.
"With the widespread devastation in many countries around the world, the
need for shelter, medical care and clean water is very high," says Paul
Wharram, Interim Secretary General of the Canadian Red Cross. Red Cross has
dispersed hundreds of thousands of dollars to quickly provide financial
assistance to Red Cross Societies helping people in China, Bangladesh, Peru,
Jamaica and other disaster-impacted countries.
Adds Wharram: "We need to respond now and be ready for the next disaster
that strikes. Red Cross is grateful to Canada's major banks for helping with
this urgent appeal."
