2nd Annual Live Smart Diabetes Expo in Edmonton
EDMONTON, April 12 /CNW/ - The Canadian Diabetes Association and
Co-presenter Shoppers Drug Mart are pleased to host a Live Smart Diabetes Expo
in Edmonton this Saturday.
While many Canadians have a basic understanding of what diabetes is; few
truly understand the serious nature of the disease. If left untreated, or
improperly managed, diabetes can result in heart disease, kidney disease, eye
disease and amputation.
"Fortunately, a lifelong commitment to good diabetes management can
reduce the risk of complications," said James Gibbins, Area Director of the
Canadian Diabetes Association. "However, committing to eat well, control your
weight, exercise and manage your blood sugars on a daily basis is not only
overwhelming, it's confusing at times."
"That's why we're hosting today's Expo" Mr. Gibbins added. "At the
Canadian Diabetes Association we believe that knowledge is the first (and
ongoing) step in the lifelong commitment to good diabetes management."
The Edmonton Live Smart Diabetes Expo brings together a spectrum of
diabetes information, products, resources and speakers under one roof making
the search for knowledge as easy as possible. Topics range from making sense
of the food we eat to finding the motivation within to accept the personal
challenge known as diabetes.
In addition to sitting back and learning from an impressive line-up of
speakers, attendees may also peruse an extensive trade show, with displays
from all sectors of the diabetes industry - consumer products, retailers,
pharmaceutical companies, fitness facilities, related not-for-profit
organizations and more.
The Edmonton Expo is taking place Saturday between the hours of 9:00 am
and 4:00 pm at the Shaw Conference Centre. The cost of admission is $20. The
Edmonton Expo is one of 13 Live Smart Diabetes Expos being held across the
country this Spring.

Diabetes has reached epidemic proportions with more than 2 million
Canadians affected. In Alberta alone, there are an estimated 130,000 people
living with diabetes.
Diabetes is a condition in which the body cannot produce insulin or
cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. The two main types of diabetes
are type 1 and type 2.
Type 1 diabetes occurs when the pancreas is unable to produce insulin.
People living with type 1 diabetes must rely on the daily delivery of insulin
to survive. To date, there is no proven way to prevent type 1 diabetes.
People with type 2 diabetes do not produce enough insulin or their body
does not effectively use the insulin that is produced. Fortunately, lifestyle
changes can help prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes. A healthy meal
plan, weight control and physical activity are important prevention steps for
this group of individuals.
