Hearing In The Deaths Of Ricardo Wesley And Jamie Goodwin Announced



    TORONTO, March 30 /CNW/ - Dr. Bonita Porter, Deputy Chief Coroner of
Inquests, today announced further details regarding the inquest into the
deaths of Ricardo Wesley and Jamie Goodwin.
    Mr. Wesley and Mr. Goodwin, both 20, died following a fire at the police
holding facility in Kashechewan First Nation on January 8, 2006. The inquest
will examine the circumstances surrounding the deaths including the cause of
the fire, fire suppression efforts and the training of First Nations police
officers.
    The presiding coroner for the inquest will be Dr. Jim Cairns, Deputy
Chief Coroner of Investigations and the counsel to the coroner will be Mr. Tom
Fitzgerald, Director Crown Operations, North Region.
    Dr. Cairns will conduct a hearing in Kashechewan on April 4, 2007, where
issues of standing, jury selection and venue location will be addressed. No
witnesses, evidence or testimony will be heard at this time. Once the issues
have been resolved, it is anticipated that the inquest proceedings will resume
in September with the presentation of witnesses.
