Health Report Uncovers Majority of Canadians Unable to Sleep Through The Night



    
    - Canadians Wake Up to the Issue of Sleeplessness -
    

    TORONTO, Feb. 26 /CNW/ - In an eye opening report released this week, an
astonishing 88% of Canadians revealed they are unable to sleep through the
night, reporting consistent disruptive slumbers and waking up at least once
nightly. A vital part of healthy living, proper sleep is as essential as diet
and exercise, yet the majority of Canadians are not receiving the sleep they
clearly dream about.
    According to the national survey conducted by Celestial Seasonings(R) as
part of the Campaign For Better Sleep, 21% of respondents report sleeping less
than 6 hours per night. Not surprisingly, 89% of survey respondents report a
regular occurrence of waking up on the wrong side of the bed - feeling tired,
cranky or irritated at least once a week. Of those, 11% experienced the
feeling EVERY morning! That's a lot of cranky Canadians.
    "With Sleepytime(R) Tea being our most popular tea flavour, we realized
that sleep is an important concern for our customers," says Claire Byrne,

invested in the health and well-being of our consumers, and we created
Campaign for Better Sleep to address and help educate on this significant
health issue," continued Byrne.
    With the final survey tally revealing 82% of respondents believing Health
Canada should make sleep a health care priority, Celestial Seasonings is
taking the matter to pillow tops of the Canadian government, and urging Health
Canada declare November 2nd National Sleep Day. Today marks the launch of
Campaign For Better Sleep's online petition
(http://www.campaignforbettersleep.com/index.php?/CFBS/petition) to see that
day realized. By signing the petition, Canadians will have their voice heard,
and rest assured, sleep will get the attention it deserves.

    
    Additional Survey Findings:

    -  Demonstrating at least an awareness of the issue, a full 98% of
       Canadians recognize the benefits of a proper night's rest and consider
       sleep a vital part of a balanced, healthy lifestyle.

    -  The majority of Canadians sleep regular as clockwork. 51% report set
       bedtime schedules every night with 65% sleeping for the recommended
       6 - 7.5 hours per night.

    -  It takes more than 30 minutes for 15% of those surveyed to fall
       asleep! Finally, an explanation for the sleep setting on television
       controllers.

    -  Pulling back the covers to reveal deeper sleep issues, 6% have been
       diagnosed with a sleep disorder, yet more than 29% of those surveyed
       use tea to wind down/fall asleep at night.

    -  T.G.I. Weekend! While only 14% of Canadians sleep for 8 or more hours
       during weekdays, 41% use the weekends to catch up on their zzz's.

    -  29% credit tea as a natural sleep remedy to wind down and fall asleep
       at night, with 23% drinking more than 3 cups of tea per day!
