TORONTO, Jan. 29 /CNW/ - In the wake of this week's Federal budget
announcement and in today's turbulent economy, the Health Council of Canada's
Chair stressed the continued need for Canadians to stay informed and updated
on the state of their health system.
"The Health Council of Canada is a unique organization with a unique role
in Canada's health care system. Canadians should want to stay as informed
about the progress of health care renewal as they are about the nation's
economy," said Dr. Jeanne Besner.
She stressed the importance of the Council's vision - an informed and
healthy Canadian public, confident in the effectiveness, sustainability and
capacity of the Canadian health care system to promote their health and meet
their health care needs - especially in today's climate of economic
Health Council of Canada CEO, Mr. John Abbott, was encouraged by the
government's investment of $500 million into electronic health records (EHRs).
"This funding is a timely initiative which will lead to improved quality
of care and help to close an information systems gap we cited in our 2008
report, 'Rekindling Reform,'" said Abbott. "Of particular interest in this
economy, Electronic Health Records will translate into real savings and a high
return on investment."
Abbott is encouraged by the federal government's willingness to meet
their financial commitments under the 2003 and 2004 accords, while still
investing in other important sectors of the economy.
The Health Council of Canada, created by the 2003 First Ministers' Accord
on Health Care Renewal is mandated to monitor and report on the progress of
health care renewal in Canada. The Health Council's vision is for an informed
and healthy Canadian public, confident in the effectiveness, sustainability
and capacity of the Canadian health care system to promote their health and
meet their health care needs.
