Health care professionals focus on best practices in medical device sterilization at Toronto conference

TORONTO, Sept. 17 /CNW/ - Canadian Standards Association (CSA), a leading
developer of standards and codes, and Accreditation Canada are hosting more
than 250 health care decision-makers, administrators and reprocessing staff at
the Medical Devices Sterilization Forum at the Doubletree International Plaza
Hotel in Toronto from September 17-18, 2008. The forum is designed to provide
attendees with the most up-to-date knowledge, tools and operational
recommendations to help meet accreditation standards for sterile processing
departments within their facilities.
"CSA is a recognized leader in developing sterilization standards for
health care facilities," said Suzanne Kiraly, President, Standards, Canadian
Standards Association as she officially opened the conference. "CSA's work is
all about life and, for more than 40 years, CSA has worked in the area of
health care technology to develop safer and more effective standards that help
benefit the lives of patients and health care providers. We have drawn on this
extensive experience to develop comprehensive sterilization standards for
medical professionals that will help prevent the spread of serious and deadly
infections."
Top medical and industry experts from across the country will lead health
care professionals in two days of interactive and informative panel
discussions focusing on key issues, best practices, and lessons learned in the
area medical device sterilization. Topics being discussed include good
reprocessing and sterilization practices; selecting, installing and
maintaining safe reprocessing equipment; conducting safe and appropriate
reprocessing and sterilization of reusable medical devices and equipment;
monitoring quality; and organization perspective on sterilization standards.
Together with Accreditation Canada, CSA has developed service excellence
standards for reprocessing and sterilization of reusable medical devices.
Accreditation Canada is a not-for-profit, independent organization that
provides national and international health and social service organizations
with a voluntary, external peer review to assess the quality of their services
based on standards of excellence.
"Accreditation Canada is pleased to work with CSA and industry experts to
ensure professionals in health care have access to the most up-to-date
standards of quality and safety in sterilization," said Wendy Nicklin,
President & CEO, Accreditation Canada. "The value of their contribution to
safe health care is enormous and we are happy to work in partnership to
support their efforts."
CSA and Accreditation Canada have also developed standards for biomedical
laboratories, blood banks, and transfusion services. Drawing on CSA's
expertise in process and procedure, these joint programs serve to strengthen
Accreditation Canada's mission to drive quality in health services through
accreditation. For more information, visit www.accreditation-canada.ca
