Health care leaders gather to tackle tough issues including childhood obesity

The Canadian Academy of Health Sciences to hold a symposium on obesity
in children and a forum on measuring the benefits of medical research

MONTREAL, Sept. 17 /CNW Telbec/ - It may not be spread by coughing or
sneezing, but it is an epidemic nevertheless - and it is out of control.
Childhood obesity rates have almost tripled in Canada over the past two
decades. One of every six Canadian kids aged 2 to 11 is clinically obese, and
more than one of every three is overweight. This epidemic will be addressed in
a special symposium at the annual meeting of the Canadian Academy of Health
Sciences in Montreal on September 17, 2007.
The majority of developed nations, including the G10 countries, support
and benefit from a national health science academy. Both the U.S. Institute of
Medicine (http://www.iom.edu/) and the U.K. Academy of Medical Sciences
(http://www.acmedsci.ac.uk/) are examples of national interdisciplinary health
academies that respond to questions and issues put to them from key
stakeholders: federal government, national non-governmental organizations,
industry, academia and major research organizations. In 2004, the health and
biomedical leadership in Canada established the Canadian Academy of Health
Sciences including fellows from all the health professions in the country. The
mission of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS) is to provide
expert, timely and unbiased analysis of the most important issues relevant to
the health of Canadians. CAHS has now elected almost 200 Fellows from across
Canada through an annual nomination and peer review procedure that recognizes
those who demonstrate a record of outstanding and exemplary accomplishment and
who are well recognized by their peers nationally and internationally for
their discovery, innovation and leadership in health science.
Numerous reports on the prevention of obesity have been produced
worldwide. These reports often deal with a description of the epidemic, health
consequences of obesity among youth and the potential of different
intervention strategies. The CAHS symposium will identify points of
convergence and divergence across reports, to determine the relevance of the
conclusions and recommendations for Canada, and especially to identify
innovative actions that could help fight the growing pandemic of obesity here
and elsewhere in the world.
In addition, as part of the annual meeting, on September 18, 2007, CAHS
will hold a full-day forum to launch the Academy's major assessment on how to
measure the benefits that society receives from medical research. Invited
speakers include the Honourable John Manley, former Deputy Prime Minister of
Canada, André Picard of the Globe and Mail, and Alain Beaudet, President and
CEO of the Fonds de la recherche en santé du Québec (FRSQ). This topic is of
great interest to government agencies, health charities, the drug and
biotechnology industry sector, and the academic community. More than 16 public
and private agencies are sponsoring this year-long assessment, including the
Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Canada's Research-Based
Pharmaceutical Companies (Rx&D), the Government of Ontario and the Public
Health Agency of Canada.
The Canadian Academy of Health Sciences will also hold its annual
induction ceremony on the evening of September 18, 2007. A total of 43 new
Fellows are being inducted into the Academy. Listings of the new Fellows and
the existing CAHS fellowship are attached.
