Health Canada - Note to editors



    OTTAWA, April 10 /CNW Telbec/ - Health Canada today released the
April 2007 issue of the Canadian Adverse Reaction Newsletter (CARN),
containing the annual adverse reaction reporting statistics for calendar year
2006. This edition also features an article on the antipsychotic drug
quetiapine, and its suspected association with inflammation of the pancreas
and a low platelet count in the blood.
    Other topics covered include an update on cardiovascular adverse
reactions related to bitter orange (synephrine), which is used in a variety of
natural health products promoted for weight loss; and a case presentation on
telithromycin, a drug used to treat respiratory tract infections, and its
suspected association with a serious skin disorder.
    The newsletter also presents a quarterly summary of health professional
and consumer advisories.
