TORONTO, April 4 /CNW/ - Public elementary occasional teachers, members
of the Hastings-Prince Edward Occasional Teacher Local of the Elementary
Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO), have ratified a tentative collective
"Occasional teachers face significant costs in moving from school to
school. This agreement compensates occasional teachers in a fair and
consistent manner that recognizes their true value to the school system," said
ETFO President David Clegg.
"This agreement should send a message to the remaining boards that have
not concluded an occasional teacher agreement with ETFO: occasional teachers
are true professionals and must be paid accordingly. I am telling these boards
today that this union will not sign a deal that does not provide notable
improvements for our members," Clegg said.
"Our team was able to negotiate a major improvement in compensation,
better benefits, and improved working conditions. This contract is a good one
for our members," said Bill Edwards, President of the ETFO Hastings-Prince
Edward Occasional Teacher Local.
The Hastings-Prince Edward Occasional Teacher Local represents 275 public
elementary occasional teachers. Their contract expired August 31, 2008. Voting
for a new collective agreement concluded earlier today.
The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario represents 73,000
elementary public school teachers and education workers across the province
and is the largest teacher federation in Canada.
