CALGARY, Nov. 27, 2011 /CNW/ - On behalf of the Honourable Bal Gosal,
Minister of State (Sport), Rob Anders, Member of Parliament (Calgary
West), today announced the Government of Canada's contribution to
Hockey Canada in support of the 2011 World Sledge Hockey Challenge. The
event is being held from November 27 to December 3 in Calgary, Alberta.
"We are pleased to support Hockey Canada as they prepare to compete
against the world's top sledge hockey teams in Calgary," said Minister
of State Gosal. "I am continually amazed at the level of skill and
conditioning that is required of these athletes to remain among the top
performers in the world. Congratulations to all participants as you
continue to strive for excellence."
"Hosting international sport events like the 2011 World Sledge Hockey
Challenge will bring an increase in economic activity to our city and
allow us to once again showcase our hospitality to the athletes and
coaches that have joined us from around the world," said Mr. Anders.
The Government of Canada is the single largest contributor to sport in
Canada and supports participation and excellence from the playground to
the podium. A contribution of $50,000 was provided to Hockey Canada for
the 2011 World Sledge Hockey Challenge through Sport Canada's Hosting Program. The Government of Canada also committed $618,000 in 2011-2012 to
