TORONTO, June 25 /CNW/ - Seven-year-old Alex Baron of Bewdley will
receive a Fire Safety Action Award from the Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety
Council at a ceremony on June 28, 2007 in Toronto. Each year Fire Safety
Action Awards are awarded to young children and teenagers who have actively
demonstrated fire safety behaviours they have learned.
While picking up garbage for Earth Day on April 22, 2007, Alex and his
mother heard a neighbour calling for help. Sensing trouble, Alex's mother left
to assist the neighbour and discovered a grass fire. There was a strong wind
that day and there was a significant amount of bush and grass behind the
neighbour's property. Realizing more help was needed to extinguish the fire,
Alex ran to another neighbour's house and asked them to call the fire
department. Shortly after, Alex returned to his mother and the Bewdley Fire
Department arrived just in time to stop the fire from getting into the nearby
bush.
"Alex's quick thinking to call the fire department helped to prevent a
bush fire," said Fire Marshal Pat Burke. "Thanks to the fire safety knowledge
he learned in school, he knew exactly what do."

The annual Fire Safety Awards recognize outstanding contributions to fire
protection and prevention in Ontario. Fire departments throughout the province
nominated individuals and organizations for this year's awards; 22 recipients
were selected. The Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services
Monte Kwinter and Fire Marshal Burke will present the awards at a luncheon
ceremony at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto.
