TORONTO, Aug. 19 /CNW/ - Delegates to the annual meeting of the
Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) today chose Rian McLaughlin
to be their representative at the Ontario Teachers' Federation (OTF) for the
next two years.
McLaughlin is the president of the Hamilton-Wentworth ETFO Occasional
Teacher Local and an occasional teacher with the Hamilton-Wentworth District
School Board. McLaughlin has been a member of the ETFO executive for 8 years.
"The value of OTF is never more apparent than when we contemplate the
health of the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan," McLaughlin told the more than
500 delegates attending ETFO's annual meeting in Toronto. "However OTF needs
measured change now to ensure it fulfills its mandate - safeguarding our
profession and our financial futures."
In addition to her role as president, McLaughlin has served her local as
chair of the professional development and communications committees, as
coordinator of public relations and political action, and as chief negotiator.
McLaughlin was named ETFO Local Leader of the Year in 1995 in recognition
of her exceptional contributions to her local and to ETFO. She is an alumnus
of the Governor General's Canadian Leadership Conference.
McLaughlin began teaching in 1989. She is active in her community and has
supported such causes as the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, Kids Help
Phone, Womankind Addiction Service, and the Sexual Assault Centre of Hamilton
and Area. Hamilton's mayor has twice cited her for her environmental work with

The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario represents 73,000
elementary public school teachers and education workers across the province
and is the largest teacher federation in Canada.
