TORONTO, Aug. 19 /CNW/ - Maureen Weinberger, a teacher with the Halton
District School Board and president of the Halton ETFO Teacher Local, was
re-elected to the executive of the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario
(ETFO) at the federation's annual meeting in Toronto today.
Weinberger began her teaching career in 1976. Her teaching assignments
with the Halton District School Board have included Kindergarten-grade 8,
teacher librarian, and guidance.
In her presentation to annual meeting delegates, she stressed that ETFO
members can be proud of the federation's 'Close the Gap' campaign. "We held to
our principle that for elementary students and elementary teachers to receive
fewer resources and respect is just wrong."
In spite of ETFO's successes, there is still much work to be done, said
Weinberger. "We have the opportunity to build on the successes of the recent
round of contract negotiations - the enhancements of resources and working
conditions we won for our members.
"We must also reflect on what we can do better as we move forward. We
know there are things we can do better as we move forward. We know there are
things we want to influence more effectively in the future," Weinberger said.
We must continue to build strong networks and relationships within the
educational community and in the broader labour movement. Internally we must
foster strong locals and ensure we have well informed and active members."
Weinberger has been president of the Halton Local since 2002 and has
served on the local executive since 1998. Her provincial federation
involvement includes participation on the Representative Council Steering
Committee, the Regional Services Task Force, and the Provincial Member Survey
Task Force. She is committed to her local community and serves on the board of
directors of Community Development Halton.
The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario represents more than
73,000 public elementary school teachers and education workers across Ontario
and is the largest teacher federation in Canada.
