TORONTO, April 7 /CNW/ - The Greater Toronto Hotel Association (GTHA)
supports yesterday's announcement by the Honourable Diane Ablonczy, Minister
of State (Small Business and Tourism) for an investment of $100 million over
two years for Marquee Tourism Events. This new program will provide economic
stimulus to deliver results that are timely and targeted to Canada's events
that attract worldwide attention.
To ensure that summer tourism events are supported successfully for the
upcoming season, funding will start swiftly through the Summer 2009 Marquee
Tourism Events funding stream. Funding will then continue over a two year
period to assist eligible events to expand their reach outside of Canada to
attract international visitors.
"We are very pleased that the Federal government is delivering quickly on
its commitment in Canada's Economic Action Plan to support tourism and help
bring Canada to the forefront of the minds of travellers, says Terry Mundell,
President of the Greater Toronto Hotel Association. Today's investment
announcement will enhance our tourism industry to provide an increased
opportunity to generate destination excitement and draw a significant number
of visitors to Toronto and Canada."
The voice of the hotel industry in the Greater Toronto Area and a major
stakeholder in the Tourism industry, the GTHA represents 170 hotels, with
approximately 34,000 guest rooms and more than 32,000 full time jobs.
