TORONTO, Nov. 9 /CNW/ - Greg Monforton (former President of the Ontario
Trial Lawyers Association and senior partner of Greg Monforton & Partners)
today reacted to the U.S. $4.85 billion Vioxx settlement reached with Merck &
Monforton's office has fielded close to 4,000 inquiries from across
Canada from people with concerns that they suffered injury by ingesting Vioxx.
Ultimately, Monforton agreed to take on over 300 individual cases involving
Canadians from all provinces. Monforton said that all of his firm's Vioxx
clients have suffered either heart attack or stroke, resulting in serious
injuries and in many cases, death.
Monforton said: "Our clients are innocent victims of corporate greed and
at long last justice is being done. We are part of a team of lawyers from
across North America that fought this injustice. We simply refused to allow
Merck & Co. to get off the hook and now we will see these innocent victims
receive fair compensation".
Although the U.S. settlement covers only U.S. cases, Monforton expects
that Merck & Co. will quickly seek to settle all of its Vioxx cases in Canada.
However, if a settlement is not forthcoming, Monforton said: "We are prepared
to fight these cases patient by patient, case by case".
