Greenhouse Gases Related to Delegate Travel will be Offset for 2008 Annual Conference

TORONTO, Aug. 14 /CNW/ - The Association of Municipalities of Ontario
(AMO) today announced that Shell has agreed to be a sponsor the 2008 AMO
Annual Conference through its marketing and trading affiliate, Shell Energy
North America (Canada) Inc. (Shell Energy).
Shell Energy's sponsorship will include the offsetting of greenhouse gas
emissions associated with all AMO Conference delegate and speaker-related
travel. In total, approximately 1,000 tonnes of CO(2) emissions will be
retired by Shell Energy in the name of AMO.
The AMO Annual Conference in Ottawa is Ontario's largest municipal
conference, attracting approximately 2,000 delegates and speakers each year.
The greenhouse gas emissions associated with delegate travel for this event
are substantial, and Shell Energy will retire verified emission reductions
(VERs) to offset these emissions. All VERs were calculated in accordance with
ISO 14064 standards and verified by a third party, ensuring their accuracy and
validity.
"The offsetting of travel-related GHG emissions for our Conference is an
important step for AMO and LAS in demonstrating an ongoing commitment to
reducing our corporate environmental footprint," said Nancy Plumridge, AMO's
Director of Administration and Local Authority Services (LAS) President.
"Municipalities are leading by example related to sustainability, and as an
association we recognize the value of running our conference in lock-step with
municipal leadership in this area," added Plumridge.
The AMO Conference is an annual gathering of municipal government
officials that offers a program theme related to current and emerging issues
for the municipal sector. This year's theme is "Leading Beyond Tomorrow", a
timely topic given the heightened awareness of rising fuel prices, risks of
climate change, and existing proposals to regulate Canada's greenhouse gas
emissions.
"As a leader in emissions credits and renewable energy marketing and
trading, we are pleased to support this conference in a positive and
sustainable way," said Mike Laderoute, General Manager of Shell Energy North
America's Eastern Canadian operations. "Our support of this conference
complements Shell's commitment to providing responsible energy solutions that
reduce climate change while maintaining a diverse network of supply that helps
meet North America's and the world's growing energy needs."
