Green Municipal Fund Commits $135,000 to the City of Corner Brook for a Wastewater Treatment Feasibility Study

CORNER BROOK, NL, Jan. 17 /CNW Telbec/ - Mayor Woodrow French of the Town
of Conception Bay South, representing the Federation of Canadian
Municipalities (FCM), and the Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries
and Oceans and Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador, on behalf
of the Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of Natural Resources, announced today a
$135,000 Green Municipal Fund (GMF) grant for the City of Corner Brook. The
City has invested this funding in the completion of a wastewater treatment
feasibility study.
"FCM's Green Municipal Fund offers a range of resources and services that
specifically address the sustainable community development needs of municipal
governments," said Mayor Woodrow French, representing FCM. "The financing and
knowledge provided by the Fund supports the development of communities that
are more environmentally, socially and economically sustainable."
"Sustainable communities are the foundation of a sustainable nation. And
that's a goal that we all share," said the Honourable Loyola Hearn. "Through
the Green Municipal Fund, our government is assisting municipalities across
the country to deliver results. Projects such as these will help to ensure a
cleaner and healthier environment for Canadians."
The feasibility study reviewed the full life cycle of effluent from
generation rates to disposal of generated sludge. It included an assessment of
the receiving waters, the current level of pollution and future impacts.
Various types of treatment-for example full secondary to screening and
diffused outfalls as well as various levels in between-were evaluated to
determine the most cost effective treatment means while protecting the future
of the Humber Arm. The level of treatment will be appropriate to remove the
required level of effluent parameters to protect the Humber Arm. Ultimately
this will result in a significant reduction of sewage pollution into the
Humber Arm.
"The feasibility study is an integral component of the City of Corner
Brook's total approach to provide a safe environment for its residents, as
well as other residents of the region, and to minimize the impact on the
environment from the City sewage disposal system," said Corner Brook Mayor
Charles Pender. "It is anticipated that sewage treatment will proceed in
conjunction with City plans to provide full treatment of the City water
supply, to reduce combined storm and sanitary sewage systems, and to set out
initiatives to reduce water consumption. The sewage treatment study is
critical to the long term planning of sanitary sewer system improvements."
The Government of Canada has endowed the Federation of Canadian
Municipalities with $550 million to establish and manage the Green Municipal
Fund. The Fund supports partnerships and leveraging of both public and private
sector funding to reach higher standards of air, water and soil quality, and
climate protection.

FCM has been the national voice of municipal governments since 1901. It
is dedicated to improving the quality of life in communities by promoting
strong, effective and accountable municipal government.
