Create Unique Contest
MISSISSAUGA, ON, and BURNABY, BC, Feb. 14 /CNW/ - Have you ever dreamed
of meeting the Great One - Wayne Gretzky? For most Canadian kids who play
hockey, the answer to that question would likely be a resounding yes. Now,
through the Great One for a Day Contest, a Canadian minor hockey team will
have a chance to meet Number 99.
Gretzky is teaming up with Samsung and Best Buy to create a
once-in-a-lifetime chance for one Hockey Canada registered minor hockey team.
During the contest period which begins today and runs through March 5, 2008,
Canadians can nominate teams through www.samsung.ca/greatone,
www.BestBuy.ca/samsung or through a contest kiosk at a local Best Buy store. A
random draw will determine which team, including coach, assistant coach and
two chaperones, will win an all-expenses-paid trip to Vancouver to meet Wayne
Gretzky. They will also attend NHL and CHL games, and participate in an on-ice
clinic with Vancouver Giants coaches.
"As a player and coach, I can't stress enough the importance of having
the opportunity to play minor hockey," says Gretzky. "Through involvement in
hockey, kids develop a sense of camaraderie and build solid foundations for
the relationships that they'll have throughout their lives. I'm hoping this
contest will remind kids and parents across the country about the benefits of
getting involved in hockey."
For Gretzky, partnering with Samsung Electronics to launch this contest
was a natural fit. The hockey great has been involved in a Samsung-sponsored
corporate initiative in which the company supports the charitable efforts of
former professional athletes.
"Samsung Canada teamed with the Wayne Gretzky Foundation about one year
ago through our Four Seasons of Hope charitable program," said Benjamin Lee,
President and CEO at Samsung Electronics Canada. "Through this partnership
with Best Buy, we're hoping to help Wayne in his efforts to ensure every
Canadian kid has a shot at playing hockey. We're also thrilled at the
opportunity to give some minor hockey players the chance to spend a day with
Wayne and provide them with several other VIP experiences."
Best Buy will be promoting and supporting the contest in its stores
across the country and on its website, www.BestBuy.ca. Contest kiosks for
minor hockey team nomination, are available in all Best Buy store locations.
"Best Buy is thrilled to be involved in this promotion and to have a hand
in giving this amazing opportunity to a Canadian minor hockey team," said
Charles Tobin, Senior Vice President at Best Buy. "Being committed to local
communities, we are proud to support Wayne's efforts to promote minor hockey
in Canada and encourage people across the country to visit our kiosks or the
one of the websites to get their favourite team in the running."
