TORONTO, Aug. 19 /CNW/ - Mark Hachmer, a teacher with the Trillium
Lakelands District School Board, was elected to the Executive of the
Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) at the federation's annual
meeting in Toronto today.
Hachmer is currently the vice-president of the Trillium Lakelands Local
of ETFO and has been a member of the negotiating team for many years.
Addressing delegates at the 2009 ETFO Annual Meeting Hachmer said, "We have
been through a period of dramatic change, change that now seems to be
accelerating. I am energetic, flexible and yet grounded. My work in the local
has always focused on adapting and preparing for what is to come. At the same
time I know the importance of defending the gains we have made."
Hachmer began teaching in 1990. Since that time he has taught students in
grades five through eight. Before being elected to a full-time position on his
local executive he was a teacher at Gravenhurst Public School. Hachmer served
as parliamentarian at the last three ETFO annual meetings and assisted in
training members to chair meetings successfully. Hachmer has served on the
Collective Bargaining Committee of the federation and on the council of the
Qualifications Evaluation Council of Ontario. He is currently on the executive
of his local labour council.
"My provincial experience has given me an appreciation of the urban
challenges, including immigration and cuts to social service, facing teachers.
My eighteen years in the Trillium Lakelands District School Board has taught
me about the needs of the near north, needs brought about by declining
enrolment and cuts to funding. These experiences will inform my actions as an
ETFO Executive member," Hachmer said.
The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario represents 73,000
elementary public school teachers and education workers across the province
and is the largest teacher federation in Canada.
