Government of Canada supports leadership project for women in western Newfoundland and Labrador

CORNER BROOK, NL, June 2 /CNW Telbec/ - The federal government is pleased
to provide support to the Corner Brook Status of Women Council to carry out a
project designed to promote leadership skills among women in the western
region of Newfoundland and Labrador.
The Honourable Helena Guergis, Minister of State (Status of Women), today
announced that the Corner Brook Status of Women Council is receiving $34,710
for its project, (S)Heroes in the Making: Developing our Leadership Skills.
The 13-month project will address one of Status of Women Canada's priority
issues, leadership development, by helping women to identify their individual
strengths and enhance their leadership skills.
"Our Government is taking action to promote leadership among women in all
parts of Canada," said Minister Guergis. "That is why I am proud today to
announce funding for this promising new project, which aims to develop a
leadership training program and provide opportunities both for interaction
with each other and mentorship with women who are already leaders in their
communities."
"We are pleased to have the support of the Government of Canada for this
endeavour," said Ms. Paula Sheppard Thibeau, Executive Director of the Corner
Brook Status of Women Council. "With this funding we will be able to provide
eight workshops in which participants will be encouraged to identify their
existing strengths and enhance their decision making and community leadership
skills."
Workshop topics will include effective communication, creative
problem-solving and teamwork. Participants will work closely with female
mentors to outline their individual goals, create personal action plans and
improve their overall social conditions.
Funding for the Corner Brook Status of Women project comes from the
Women's Community Fund, of the Women's Program of Status of Women Canada.

Status of Women Canada is a federal government agency working to promote
equality for women and their full participation in the economic, social and
democratic life of Canada.
