VAL-D'OR, QC, Jan. 22 /CNW Telbec/ - The Minister of State for Canada
Economic Development, the Honourable Denis Lebel, today announced a $2.2
million non-repayable contribution to the Corporation de développement
industriel et commercial de la région de Val-d'Or. The funds will enable the
organization to implement its project to build a Northern mining transit
centre at Val-d'Or airport.
The role of the new building will be to meet the needs of mining
companies and their suppliers who, in view of the distances involved, have to
use air transportation. The project will require investment of $6.7 million
and will create, from the outset, four full-time jobs.
"The Northern mining transit centre will be strategically important for
Abitibi-Témiscamingue and its economy," noted the Minister of State. "Indeed,
this new infrastructure will serve mining companies conducting activities in
the Far North and generate direct financial spinoffs, in particular for SMEs
supplying goods and services."
The financial assistance to the Corporation de développement industriel
et commercial de la région de Val-d'Or is being provided under the Major
Economic and Tourism Facilities initiative of the Community Diversification
program, which aims in particular to help regions and communities experiencing
slow economic growth to acquire facilities, while generating short- and
medium-term economic spinoffs.
Mining is considered a promising growth sector for Abitibi-Témiscamingue,
along with tourism and the processing of agri-food and forestry products.
These are the priority areas in which Canada Economic Development has decided
to focus its development efforts for the region.
